This talk will provide an overview of the current and future drivers, thrusts and emphasis on data-driven discovery. The emergence of the paradigm for data-to-knowledge-to-action and the critical role that visualization and visual analytics plays in this area will be discussed. The evolution of data (in terms of data generation and data characteristics) affects many aspects of discovery and visualization, and changes the ways in which future visual analytics solutions can be developed. A broad overview of the research and development areas and challenges in this area will be provided and the key domains and federal agencies that will benefit from these solutions will be discussed. A few use-cases of data-driven discovery and visualization will be discussed.
