Visual Analysis of Social Media and Tools for Sentiment Analysis During this presentation I will discuss our sentiment visualization project, an attempt to estimate and visualize sentiment and other properties of short text snippets in a variety of ways. We are currently focusing on recent tweets, obtained through Twitter's tweet capture API, although our techniques can be applied to any short text block. I will review current techniques for sentiment estimation and text visualization, then demonstrate a web-based application we have made available to allow the general public to explore recent tweets based on keywords they provide. I will conclude by briefly discussing a collaboration with colleagues in Public Policy at NCSU and San Jose State University designed to apply our work to emergency management risk mitigation and communication during wildfire incidents.   Christopher G. Healey is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University. He also teaches at the Institute for Advanced Analytics. He received a B.Math from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Canada, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. He is an Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Applied Perception. His research interests include visualization, graphics, visual perception, and areas of applied mathematics, databases, artificial intelligence, and aesthetics related to visual analysis and data management   Refreshments will be served.
